Chris Riddell

Chris Riddell is a very well established artist and is well known, he has worked on many book and also written and published his own. I have loved his art since I was young and bought an Alice in Wonderland book with his illustration on the cover. 

His work is scratchy and mostly black and white and consists of well place negative space. This use of negative space draws the eye around the piece and makes the audience look closer at the details.

Finnished (almost) eye.

This is the almost finished piece for a section of the book I have chosen to narrate in illustration. The part I am narrating says, "I think I went mad then.". I found that I was really drawn to this sentence, I thought it was very powerful and showed the true feelings of the man in his horrific ordeal. So, each time I read through this book I decided this was one part I would definitely be illustrating.
I decided to draw the mans eye, wide and scared to show his sanity has gone and that he is completly terrified with what he has witnessed. The more I drew the eyes I decided that I wanted the reflection of the monster in the eyes to be visible when you look closer.
This is the finnished eye, I have added more to it with fineliner, and I plan to add more and clean it up digitally.

As I am doing a vingette of a man escaping from the ww1 boat, I have been doing some research on what an escape boat would look like. This is proving to be slightly difficult to get a clear picture, but I have got an idea from what I  can see.

I have been looking at videos like this to learn more about drawing eyes. His walk through videos are very detailed and show us every aspect of drawing a realistic eye. Mark Crilly also has many other videos on many subjects of drawing,

Ww1 fleet boat vingette

Here is the final fleet boat vingette. I want to keep the boat looking messy but still have some little details. To create this I used a 0.05 and 0.1 liners, I like the out come of this, as it is a vingette I have kept it small to fit in the first page.

In the book the main character describes his time in the navy, where he was captured, escaped then fell in to the situation leading to meeting the Dagon. So I have decided to create a vingette of a fleet boat that is according to the time frames about where the book was written.
To do this I have been looking at some books showing different types of boat used in the war at this time to get some idea.
