Research of a professional Illustrator (Professional studies)

As part of my research for Professional Studies I will be looking at a professional illustrator to see how they work and network or promote their work. First I am going to look at a freelance illustrator, I have chosen to research Derek Hess.

Derek Hess has many ways in which he networks to get an audiences attention to receive work, he has a website, Twitter, Facebook and Myspace page where he posts and keeps people updated on what he is working on, where his work will be shown and give the public a way of contacting him for work.

This is Derek Hess's website: http://www.derekhess.com/
On the homepage of his website is a list of links to his Twitter, Facebook and Myspace pages, this makes it easier for people to click on to and follow on those social networking websites, making it easier for them to keep up to date with his work and events.
There is also a list of pages to visit on that website, this list includes:

  • News
  • News archive
  • About
  • Gallery
  • STRHESS
  • Links
  • Guestbook
  • Contact
  • Tattoos
This list makes it easy for people to see what is going on, keeping the website clean and simple. The news, news archive, about and gallery options will make it easy for people to see and keep up to date with his events and current happenings. The gallery shows the audience his work and style, so they can have a look and see if they would like to buy some of his work or commission him for a piece.
The STRHESS option will take the person to another website that is a clothing website with Derek Hess's work on the clothing, and the tattoo option shows the person tattoos of his work.
The guestbook option gives the public a way to write their views and opinons about Dereks work. The contact option is the most important option on the page as this gives the public a way to get in touch with Derek and request work and commisions from him.

Derek Hess also has other ways of getting people to know about his work and current events, he uses Facebook, Twitter and MySpace to post his recent work and comissions. Derek posts on these social networking sites regularly to keep people updated and aware of his work.

Layered sketch (Reportage)

Here is a piece consisting of three different sketches placed on top of each other.

Blind drawing (Reportage)

Blind drawing of life drawing from 29th of September.
I liked the outcome of this technique be very interesting and fast, drawing in attention and pulling the eye around the piece.

Life drawing 21st September

Here is piece that I created while drawing a life model on the 21st September.
I created this piece using different coloured pens and adding water to make the ink bleed and create an iteresting effect.

Rebecca Abell (Reportage artist)

Here is an artist I have found called Rebecca Abell. She mainly creates fashion illustrations but I have found some reportage pieces created by her. I like Rebecca's work as it is soft and has a calm atmosphere

Rob Conway (Reportage artist)

Here is an artist called Rob Conway, I have found some sketches by him where he has drawn his surroundings. Most of them show a lot of colour and minimal lines. Creating a very interesting effect.

Evan Turk (Reportage artist)

Here is another artist I have found called Evan Turk. His illustrations are very fast flowing and attention grabbing, he uses bright attractive colours and interesting uses of negative space.

Inspiration from Gail Brown

After looking at Gail Brown's one minute chalk drawing I decided to create a few examples of fast one charcoals sketches when drawing from a life model. Here are my pieces.

Gail Brown

Here is a one minute sketch by Gail Brown I have found. I love the fast appearance that shows movement and a clear figure.
I found this piece in a book called Experimental Drawing written by Robert Kaupelis and published by Watson-Guptill Publications.

Gerard Butler (Reportage artist)

Found this repotage artist George Bulter.
I like how he uses negative spaces and only uses colour in certain places of the pieces.

Alan Baker

Here is an artist I have found called Alan Baker, he creates beautiful pieces of wildlife using attention grabbing, vivid colour.

One of his pieces show a variety of animals he has created by comining two types of animals together, I chose to look at this piece for inspiration as our brief asks us to create pieces of nonsense animals inspired by a collection of other animals.
